Manufacturing Challenges & How RS Pigments Solves Them

Technical bottlenecks in paper mills & specialty pulp often result from pigment agglomeration, heat degradation, or resin interaction. Our refined inorganic formulations eliminate these issues.

0 1

Natural Cellulose Yellowness in Virgin and Recycled Pulp

Industry Bottleneck: Wood fibers, lignin traces, and recycled de-inked pulp carry a natural yellow cast. Fluorescent whitening agents (OBAs) alone cannot fully compensate and degrade rapidly under indoor fluorescent and natural light.
RS Pigments Solution: Synthetic Ultramarine Blue absorbs complementary yellow wavelengths (570–590 nm), providing permanent, non-fading physical optical whiteness without relying entirely on fugitive chemical brighteners.
0 2

Low Single-Pass Pigment Retention in Wet-End Papermaking

Industry Bottleneck: Fine pigment particles pass through the fourdrinier forming fabric into the white water system, leading to high chemical losses, foaming, and wastewater contamination.
RS Pigments Solution: Our paper-grade ultramarine is engineered with an optimized ionic surface charge that binds readily with cationic retention aids and alum, achieving single-pass retention rates exceeding 88%.
0 3

Two-Sidedness and Mottling in Finished Paperboard

Industry Bottleneck: Differential drainage forces on high-speed paper machines cause pigment particles to settle unevenly, resulting in noticeable shade variation between the felt and wire sides of the sheet.
RS Pigments Solution: A narrow, tightly controlled particle size distribution ensures uniform fiber entrapment throughout the sheet thickness, eliminating two-sidedness in premium printing paper and packaging board.

Processing Guidelines

Dispersion, Dosing & Medium Compatibility

Recommended Dosing: 0.01% – 0.08% (100–800 grams per metric ton of dry pulp fiber) for optical whiteness; up to 1.5% for solid blue packaging paper
Processing Temperature Range: Machine drying cylinders operating at 100°C–140°C
Dispersion & Milling Recommendation: Prepare a 10%–20% aqueous master slurry using low-shear agitators before metering into the blending chest, machine chest, or fan pump intake.
