Pigment Violet 15: Chemistry, Manufacture and Polymer Performance
Synthesized through lattice expansion of ultramarine blue, Pigment Violet 15 provides pure reddish-violet shades and high thermal endurance for plastics and inks.

Pigment Violet 15 (CI 77013, CAS 12769-96-9) is manufactured by treating synthetic ultramarine blue with hydrogen chloride gas at elevated temperatures, replacing part of the sodium ions and expanding the crystalline sodalite lattice.

The result is an inorganic reddish-violet pigment with outstanding lightfastness (Blue Wool Scale 7-8) and thermal endurance above 300°C. It is completely insoluble in organic solvents, ensuring bleed-free performance in packaging inks and polymers.

Key Technical Takeaways

  • Ultramarine Blue is chemically non-nucleating, eliminating shrinkage and warping in HDPE and PP injection moldings.
  • Thermal stability up to 350°C in specialized heat-resistant grades and NANOX compounding platforms.
  • Total resistance to alkaline environments (5/5 rating), ideal for masonry coatings, concrete, and laundry powders.
